The Copyright Licensing Agency (CLA) is proposing to include CLA repertoire in the Student Assessment Licence offered by the Copyright Clearance Center (CCC), the US equivalent of CLA, creating a potential new revenue opportunity from the licensing of extracts used in examination papers in the USA. This activity is covered by an exception to copyright in the UK, and it is not currently included in the mandate provided by CLA to CCC.
The Student Assessment Licence (SAL) is held by a number of commercial assessment providers in the US. CLA has a strong relationship with CCC and already exchanges repertoire and revenue under bilateral agreements.
The scheme is expected to generate revenues for UK publishers and distributions will be based on usage data.
