  • Ensure that all your works are covered by the collective licensing system and earn copy royalties if your works are picked up in copy surveys
  • Have a voice in your collective licensing system on matters such as licence development
  • There are no joining fees - so joining PLS does not add any cost to the publisher
  • Collective licensing in the UK is voluntary but is important in enabling wider use of copyright-protected content, eg for education, business research and ensuring accessibility for the visually impaired
  • All proposals that PLS agrees to are approved by the publishing industry via the trade associations – therefore we believe your rights are never at risk through collective licences

  • Over the last 5 years PLS has distributed an average of £23.7m to UK publishers per annum

    How does collective licensing work

CLA sells licences enabling organisations to copy very limited extracts of publications for limited uses (typically one article, or one chapter of a publication for research purposes).  Key sectors which are licensed in the UK are:

  • Schools, FE colleges and Universities

  • Government Bodies and Local Authorities

  • Public Bodies, eg the NHS

  • Businesses, eg law firms and pharmaceutical companies

Jane Towle of CGP Books has worked with PLS for a number of years and says:

  • "Over the years, the PLS has provided us with a really friendly and efficient service, taking the hassle out of collective licensing.  We’ve also found them to be very knowledgeable and approachable in answering any queries on licensing issues and they’re always happy to help.

Thanks to the PLS, we feel confident that our publishing rights are protected while our customers get the most out of our books with a minimum of fuss."
